The making of the famous Mr.Me to You Bear Cake

I made this super cute Mr. Me to You Bear a while ago for my friend's baby shower. And a lot of people asked me how I made it and what icing tip I used to make this cake.
So... I thought I give you a glimpse of the making of Mr.Bear. I didn't take a lot of pictures of the process, I only have a couple of them but I hope these few pictures will give you some idea of how the bear was made.
I used 2 size of cakes, 6" round cakes for the body and 4" round cakes for the head.
You will also need extra 6" cake for the body parts.
Here is a glimpse of how I stacked the cakes. I carved and shaped the head first before I stacked them on to the body. I assembled the 2 layers of 6" cake for the body and then attached the 4" head.
Once this is done, I secured the cakes by putting a dowel through the center of the cake.
Once the cakes is secured and doweled, I carved and shaped Mr.Bear's body.
For the body parts, I used cake truffles from a 6" round cake and the extra from the carving. (Cake truffles is a mixture of cake crumbs mixed together with any cake filling. Just use enough filling to make the crumbs moist and shape-able)
And here it is.. a 2nd picture of Mr.Bear, half frosted and all body parts attached. He kinda looked like a panda at this stage hehehe.. I then carefully frosted him with buttercream before I started piping his fur.
This is the icing tip that I used to pipe his fur, Wilton icing tip 233 not 234 as shown in pic. I took a picture of the wrong one and I'm too lazy to take another one haha. It is the same tip that you use to make grass look frosting. Tip 234 is larger, I think you can also use this one but I like the smaller tip better because you can go inside smaller space and also it gives more delicate fur look.
You can also find a good tutorial of how to make grass icing/frosting in Wilton website.
The nose, patch, eyes, paws and the bunny are made of fondant icing which I also attached to the bear before I piped his fur..except the bunny, I attached it after the bear is done.
When you get to this stage, all you need now are strong muscle and patience to pipe all those fur on Mr.Bear hahaha

That cake is absolutely amazing!! Could you tell me what recipe you used for the icing? I've tried a few different ones to do grass and they don't seem to work :( and help would be most appreciated :)

Hi, I'm not sure about BC for tropical weather..but try Wilton BC that might work. Maybe try adding Wilton meringue powder that might work. Good luck!

Absolutely amazing work! Love this bear. What icing did you use to pipe the bear's fur and how did you attach the bunny after frosting the fur so that it does not mess up. Wonderful cake.

ReplyDeleteHi I'm attempting this cake in stages for a sprinkle (mini shower) on Sunday (my own actually lol)and I was curious as to the fondant nose and snout? Is it just a large blob of fondant? Or is it shaped over a bit of cake truffles?and is the butter cram all thaqtsz holding it on is there a toothpick or two? thanks!

ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful cake. I've never made a carved cake, can you tell me please, is there a cardboard board between the 6" and 4" cakes? If so, do you have to pre-cut a whole in the board to get the dowel through to the base of the cakes or do you just break through the board with the dowel? I have no idea how to do a centre dowel... what did you do in this instance?

ReplyDeleteHow did you attach the arms, and the nose area. I've tried to make this bear before and the arms were too heavy and didn't stay (I didn't try them as truffles, I used fondant). The nose area I made from fondant, and it was too heavy to stay on. How many dowels did you use? I should've used some in mine because it ended up falling over.

Hi I was wondering if you could make this cake with choc biscuit or would it be too heavy. I love the cake and Tutorial!!!!! I made it with choc sponge cake for my daughters 1st birthday last year and it went down a treat. Lets hope this one turns out just as good. I am a bit worried about choc biscuit though. ReplyDeleteSince Wilton's "Standing bear pan" did not arrive on time, I used this tutorial to create a 3D panda (a copy of his plush giant panda) for my nephew's 1st birthday.
ReplyDeleteHe exclaimed "Oh, oh" when he saw the mini "Pa" on the table, looked at it for a bit and then clapped. :-) :-) :-) It was the best compliment ever!!! Made it totally worthy it going the extra mile to create a unique cake for him.
His Panda cake served 40, easily. It was made of 2 round 8"/20cm cakes + 2 round 6"/15cm cakes + 2 round 5"/12cm cakes out of which I carved the legs. I used "truffles" to shape arms, nose/mouth protuberance and ears. Fondant bits only for nose tip and eye balls.
Completely decorated the Panda alone stood 11" tall. And it was heavy, I didn't weight it but estimate it was about 6-ish something pounds.
BTW... I'm not a baker (professional or amateur), but decided to try to make it anyway. Your tutorial was the key to my success :-) Thank you very much for this tutorial.
When I saw the first picture I thought it was just a teddy bear, I'm really amazed with the design of your cake! This would be a perfect cake for kids. =)
